Project 2: final submission

narrative: as she stood there feeling confined and trapped by the monotony of her everyday duties, she becomes distracted and daydreams about her life as a young woman, offering her a momentary escape... ideas:
stair - the stair is one continuous loop with no defined beginning or end. They represent the struggle she feels as a result of the monotony of her everyday life. Stairs are repetitive just like the tasks in which she is struggling with everyday. The rise and fall of the stair, symbolises her state of being as she drifts in and out of her reality and her daydream.

metal wall - i decided to use a solid rusted metal wall to represent the world of her reality. The curved nature of the wall and its position in relation to the stair appears to push down on the woman, 'confining' her as she makes her way through the space. It begins as a low wall where the greatest amount of compression exists, and then proceeds to open up and curve out as she reaches the top of the stair. This symbolises her drifting out of her reality as she is distracted by her daydream. The material choice was deliberate in that rusted metal has a particular stench. The smell reminds her of her laborious work reinforcing the reality of her situation.

curved wall - At the point where this wall (symbolising her daydream) meets the metal wall (ie her reality) it appears cage-like adding to this sense of confinement and entrapment. This feature is related to the design of the window in the painting which also possesses this cage-like quality. As the woman moves up the stair and is taken over by her daydream, the curved structure opens out and slightly warps, representing her 'momentary escape' only to realise she must be forced back down to reality by the stair.

base: the triangular base in which the structure sits on was created using the angle created by the window in the artwork. This angle of 72` created the peak of an isosceles triangle and it is at this point where her 2 worlds meet and create a junction from which the 2 curves open out toward the cliff in the distance.
