Project 3: Final Design Concept

Concept: stencil art and context - how the technique is used to create two totally different art styles.

Gallery: consists of 2 main sections
1) Stencil Art Gallery - shows high end art intended to be displayed in t traditional gallery setting
- space is naturally lit with clean finishes, polished concrete floors and simple circulation pattern
-white rendered walls with high ceilings

juxtaposed against...

2) Photography of stencil street art - Photos of stencil street art brought into a gallery context
-to get to the street art gallery, you are forced down into the space
- space is dimly lit and uses spot lighting to display works
- wall rendering deteriorates, it becomes rough and then eventually becomes painted or exposed brick
-circulation pattern changes orientation and becomes based on laneways and alleys - ie the setting in which street art exists

lighting:
- overhead light tunnels are used - give a similar effect to the experience of walking down an alley in between 2 buildings where light floods in from above.
- effect of this in the gallery is that it creates an 'alley' of light that people pass through.

apartment:
- the lane way configuration of the street art gallery is translated in the apartment to form the rooms and spaces. However, it has been rotated 90` in order to conform with the alignment of the stencil art gallery. Therefore links can be drawn between the 2 types of art exhibited in the gallery to the owner's apartment space.

facade:
a white rendered wall is used to represent the 'mainstream' (ie the well respected high end stencil art). This wall is interrupted by intersecting walls and materials (ie various materials that could be considered the canvases for street artists) This relates to how street art imposes itself on us. It is there to be seen, not to blend in. In a way the facade and the gallery attempts to allude to the context in which one may find street art it.
Dappled light enters through the facade via small slits. This can be likened to peeping through a fence in a back alley, where people only see a glimpse of what is housed behind the prominent facade.

Project 3: progression of design

In response to the problems with my early design, my idea further developed. The concept behind my gallery is that it displays stencil art, and the various contexts that are associated with it. It is about how one art technique is used to create 2 totally different types of art. As a result the gallery will have a space to display high end stencil art which is intended to be displayed in a traditional gallery setting.

This is juxtaposed against another space of the gallery where a photography of stencil street art has been brought into a gallery context.

sketchup model showing the roof- elements impose on the roof and cut through it. This relates to my initial idea of the imposing nature of street art.

section: level changes signify the change in gallery type. patrons are forced down into a lower area where the street art is shown.

Section 2 - shows the stencil art gallery with the high ceilings and simple spaces. Also demonstrates how the skylight impose themselves on the roof plane.

Plan: circulation is used to distinguish between the 2 main gallery spaces. This is achieved by changing the orientation, forcing the occupant into another direction. Also an 'alley' like feel is created in the layout due to the placement of the walls. The setup of the sculpture courtyard is based on the idea that street art is often displayed down alleys and around corners, therefore people are forced to discover the spaces created by corners and narrow hallways to once again express an alley like feel.

Project 3: the art

the image below embodies one of the main ideas behind my gallery. It reveals how people pass by this type of street art in their everyday lives. Street art does not have permission to impose itself on these buildings walls, hence why pedestrians are forced to engage with it. It is not there to blend in. It is there to be noticed.

Project 3: development of idea

from my initial concepts i decided to chose an art gallery that displayed and sold stencil art as well as stencil street art.

I wanted to reveal how street art imposes itself on viewers. It does not have permission to be there, yet people are forced to see it. This formed the basic idea behind the plan below.

This plan however was relitively unsuccessful. The translation of the my concept into my design was too literal. Having jaggered spaces that literally peirce through walls and intrude on other spaces, was not only too literal, but it also created alot of wasted space in my design.

Project 3: Concepts for Gallery

1) organic

My original concept for my gallery was that it would display organic inspired art. This refers to works similar to that of Bronwyn Oliver.

2) street art

a gallery that houses stencil art and stencil street art. I feel this type of art would suit the area, and be more successful as a commercial gallery. The facade would translate Newtown divese mix of people, culture and social demographics.

Project 3: Site

After 2 trips to visit the selected sites outlined in the brief i came to the decision that site 1 would be used for my gallery. The reason for this was its close proximity to the Dendy Cinema as well as popular restaurants and cafes. This therefore means a large amount of human traffic exists in these areas, as well as late at night while the cinema is in operation.

This site was also selected because of the park that exists behind the site. I felt, since this Gallery must also house a unit for the owner, the view of the park will be an escape from the business and noise of King Street. surrounding shop fronts
