i have decided to locate this space on a cliff however it is not located on the edge, it is set back instead. The reason for this is that impressive views are still available, however for my design i want to enhance the feeling of being brought back down to earth by reality. Therefore the view in the distance momentarily frees the woman, however it is far enough away reinforcing she will never reach it.

Stair to Nowhere...
This piece by Olafur Eliasson evokes a similar idea to what i am trying to convey in my internal stair. The stair turns on itself creating a path to nowhere, forcing those who use it on a continuous loop with no end or destination. I want to express the struggle and monotony of her everyday tasks, and the fact she is faced with the same predicament everyday. The rise and fall of the stair is indicative of her feelings as she drifts in and out of her reality and her daydream.

I love the organic forms created by Renzo Piano in the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Noumea. He looked at native methods of construction to design the series of towers. The main feature i find appealing is how they begin rather dense at the base and then gently loosen toward the tips. Something similar will be designed to represent her 'dream' and she drifts from her state of reality (dense) to that of her dream(free).

In looking at precedents i stumbled across this Church in Oakland USA. I was intrigued by its structure and it ability to draw you in and create a focal point. The form narrows to one area and the patterns created by the adjustable wooden louvers draw your attention to the alter space. I then understood the ability the form of a structure has in creating an atmosphere, hence i decided to design something that will be successful in expressing a confined trapped atmosphere that transforms into something free and loose through this idea of having it narrow to a point of significance.

This artwork by Bronwyn Oliver reveals the freedom of organic forms. The space that represents her daydream, will therefore remain organic in shape as it suggests the freedom associated with the daydream.
